Helpful tips for relieving bloating and gas pains in the digestive system
Eat and drink slowly. Taking your time can help you swallow less air. Try to eat away from distractions; eating when you are stressed or running increases the amount of air you swallow.
Avoid fizzy drinks, as they increase carbon dioxide gas.
Avoid chewing gum and hard candy. When you chew gum or suck on hard candy, you swallow more air than usual.
Don't smoke. When you inhale smoke, you also inhale and swallow air.
Check your dentures. Ill-fitting dentures can cause you to swallow excess air when eating and drinking.
Mobility: Taking a short walk after eating may help.
Heartburn treatment: Over-the-counter antacids or other treatments may be helpful for occasional mild heartburn, but GERD may require prescription-strength medication or other treatments.
